Nevertheless due to the higher difficulty level for Orzammar and the hints dropped in the game, only a small proportion of players pick him up early. It's certainly possible to get Oghren earlier, and dialogue for him exists in the other quests as well. Notice that I said "generally encountered" not "always encountered". Dog and/or a lover would be obvious companions to bring in to DAW, but they didn't, and thats one of many reasons why DAW is a dissapointment. DAW is in my opinion a game/expansion) with a finished story, finished gameplay but barely a connection to DAO and without the depth of DAO. Yo can get orghren very early, i have finished orzama(paragon of her kind) before i finished any of the othe main missions, so that statement does not hold. Oghren was the sole exception because a) he was generally encountered at near the end of the game so there was less opportunity to explore his personality than there was for the other characters, and even more importantly, b) he was a favorite of some of the developers who no doubt lobbied hard for his inclusion.

A decision was made early on to create new characters for the expansion over bringing back the old characters. The development team did the best they could with the people they had in the time they were given. The truth is that the company bean counters dedicated only a very limited amount of developer/programming talent to the expansion.

So why should they suddenly start caring about inconsistency regarding Dog's possible return? They don't. And yet it's like none of that happened in Awakening. There were more players who were so annoyed by Oghren that they ruined his chances with Felsi and/or drove him from the party. There were more players who sacrificed their Warden. Given that they allowed dead warden characters who sacrificed themselves to come back from the dead I doubt the existence of a very small number of games in which the pc killed Dog was in and of itself a bar to allowing Dog to return. So whether or not a character was killable had nothing to do with why Oghren was able to return while Dog wasn't. You could always imagine that Dog is back in Denerim/Highever/Orzammar/Dalish Encampment/whereever sleeping by the fire waiting for his master to return. Dog cannot die if you choose the Human Noble Origin, but then there are 5 other Origins where he can be killed (usually around the point where the houndmaster asks you to muzzle him). Same reason why Oghren was the companion in Awakening, its about whether they could have survived Origins or not. Do not continue it unless it really needs a response.
